WHAT IS EPS?

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is manufactured by expanding small polystyrene beads containing a blowing agent, using steam. The beads are expanded in a pre-foamer, stored for a short time and then steam heated. The beads expand further, and is bonded together. The insulation products are molded into panels, blocks or on continuous belts. EPS has a semi-open pore structure.

EPS in construction

EPS is a petroleum based product made from crude oil, and does not contain ozone depleting CFC/HCFC compounds. A large amount of energy, and consequently the environment, can be conserved by using EPS as building insulation. EPS is not water soluble or dispersed in air, and consequently does not contribute to local pollution. Fungi and bacteria can not grow on EPS. The product is available as expanded polystyren panels, with a choice of densities. Heavier products usually have greater thermal insulation capacity and crushing strength

EPS in packaging

The use of EPS rather than cardboard cartons in applications like thermotransport of seafood brings many advantages. The product is more solid, costs less and weighs less, which means more cargo per shipment. Less energy is consumed in the manufacturing process, which is cost effective for both the environment and end product.

Focus on the environment

BEWI Produkter AS is focused on health, environment and safety, and a member of Responsible Care®. This means that the company is bound to openness and continuous improvement in the health and environment sectors.

Each kilogram of oil used in the manufacture of EPS building insulation, can over a fifty year period save 150 kg worth of heating oil.

Responsible Care® is the chemical industry's global voluntary environment initiative.
